2. THE WELD

The weld is a homogeneous bond between two or more pieces of metal, wherein, the strength of the welded joint equals or exceeds the strength of the original base metal; this is accomplished in part by controlling the Welding Process Variables and the elimination of welding defects. This may also be refered to as a " WELDMENT "

A. The parts of a weld

The parts of a weld sometimes called "weld nomenclature" is used for engineering and inspection purposes in diagnosing, diagraming and identification of anomalies, defects and other data such as that found on blueprint "welding symbols" and other sketches or shop drawings.

B. The types of welds

Also may be known as "Joint Geometry ." The type of weld is usually identified by its cross section. For this basic training lesson only three of the many types of welds will be shown: BEAD, FILLET WELD, GROOVE WELD.

C. The weld joints

When two object are brought togeather to be joined or welded they form one fo Five Joints: BUTT JOINT, CORNER JOINT, EDGE JOINT, LAP JOINT, TEE JOINT

D. The weld positions

The welding operation is always done in the FLAT or down-hand position when ever possible. In many situations it is not possible to orientate the work to this position, the welding must be performed in the fixed out of position HORIZONTAL, VERTICAL, OVERHEAD. The weld position is determined by the orientation of two factors: 1. the axis of the weld, 2. The rotation of the face of the weld.

E. The heat affected zone { HAZE }

A weldment includes the base metal "the original metal to be joined and the deposited filler or fused metal. The heat affected zone is the area of the base metal that goes through a physical / mechanical change as a results of the intense heat from the welding process. Usually stress and distortion consentrates along this area that runs parallel and close to the toe of the weld.

F. The weld symbol
